Rural Futures

Rural Futures PDF Author: Gerardo Semprebon
Publisher: LetteraVentidue Edizioni
ISBN: 886242714X
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 104
Book Description
The international debate on the modification of Chinese ruralities opens new theoretical and practical dimensions for architectural design. China’s rural lands, collectively owned by the peasantry, are under pressure. A dramatic socio-economic transition, an imponent political agenda, a land-use speculation process, an awakening of cultural values, and several other forces are reframing the conceptual and operative framework of the countryside’s transformation. Drawing on a fieldwork experience conducted in the Fujian Province, the book explores the Chinese countryside’s transient condition and its future implications.

The Interstitial Spaces of Urban Sprawl

The Interstitial Spaces of Urban Sprawl PDF Author: Cristian A. Silva
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 100051806X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 220
Book Description
This book proposes the idea of interstitial space as a theoretical framework to describe and understand the implications of in-between lands in urban studies and their profound transformative effects in cities and their urban character. The analysis of the interstitial spaces is structured into four themes: the conceptual grounds of interstitial spaces; the nature of interstices; the geographical scale of interstices; and the relationality of interstices. The empirical section of the book introduces seven cases that illustrate the varied nature of interstitiality to finally discuss its implications in the broader field of urban studies. Reflections upon further lines of enquiry and theories of urbanisation, urban sprawl, and cities are highlighted in the conclusion chapter. This is the ideal text for scholars of urban planning, strategic spatial planning, landscape planning, urban design, architecture, and other cognate disciplines as well as advanced students in these fields.

Urban Roar

Urban Roar PDF Author: Jordan Lacey
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN: 1501360582
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 200
Book Description
Urban Roar argues for the existence of 'autonomous affectivities' that roar beneath the din of the urban, seeking the attention of us humans so captured by the environments of our own making. In hearing the urban roar, it is the mythic intention of this book to discover ways in which we can work with the intensities of more-than-human forces to vitalize our cities. The book explores methods by which artists, particularly those sound artists involved in fieldwork practices, might encounter and translate autonomous affectivities between different environments. Of particular interest is Jung's concept of synchronicity and its relationship to artistic creation – as experience, flow and catalyst – in manifesting autonomous affectivities into diverse and affective environments. The book makes use of both theoretical and practical approaches: from a study of scholarship through which it is argued that an autonomous affectivity is equivalent to an archetype (via Jung) and an essence (via Deleuze's reading of Spinoza), to theoretical considerations of the situated body in everyday contexts, to practical study of an artistic research experiment designed to reveal and index autonomous affectivities encountered during fieldwork practices, for the purpose of influencing urban design interventions. In this fresh analysis, Lacey reveals the possibilities in urban environments.

The Barcelona Pavilion by Mies van der Rohe

The Barcelona Pavilion by Mies van der Rohe PDF Author: Dietrich Neumann
Publisher: Birkhäuser
ISBN: 303561993X
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 352
Book Description
While Mies van der Rohe’s pavilion at the International Exposition in Barcelona in 1929 went unnoticed by most of the visitors to the fairgrounds, contemporary critics enthusiastically hailed it as the most convincing statement of the Modern Age. This book presents 100 selected texts about this much discussed building, written then and now: from the opening speech by the Spanish king, to newspaper articles and private letters, voices of contemporary architects, architecture critics and historians, and even a text by artist Ai Weiwei, who created an installation in the outdoor area of the pavilion in 2010. Thus the history of this building’s reception depicts a dazzling picture and inconceivable breadth, including statements by such eminent authors as Frank Lloyd Wright, Leonardo Benevolo, Rem Koolhaas, Peter Eisenman.
